Gabapin is an anticonvulsant medication that functions by reducing abnormal brain activity and influencing specific nerves and chemicals responsible for seizures and pain. It is extensively used to manage and avert seizures in individuals with epilepsy. In addition to preventing seizures, Gabapin is also employed to manage restless leg syndrome, alleviate postherpetic neuralgia (pain that follows a shingles outbreak), trigeminal neuralgia, and various other pain conditions.
Gabapin is typically prescribed following a precise dosing schedule. Patients usually take it at consistent intervals throughout the day. Some individuals may be instructed to take it three times daily, and in such cases, doctors will advise against allowing more than 12 hours between doses to minimize the risk of seizures. Discontinuing the medication suddenly is discouraged due to the potential for worsening seizures or withdrawal symptoms. Generally, prescribers will recommend a gradual reduction in dosage when discontinuing treatment.
Side effects can include ear pain, eye irritation, memory issues, involuntary body shaking or eye movements, increased appetite, or weight gain.
In rare instances, patients on Gabapin may experience other serious side effects. It is crucial to seek immediate medical help or consult your physician if you notice a worsening of seizures, the onset of fever or flu-like symptoms, or any other severe reactions.
